Es enthält Soundtracks von Meisterwerken der Filmgeschichte aus über sechs Jahrzehnten und 19 verschiedenen Ländern. Darunter vielgeliebte Ohrwürmer von Komponisten wie Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota und Philip Glass.
Für seine Einspielung fährt der berühmte französische Tastenzauberer eine Starbesetzung auf: das Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia unter der Leitung Antonio Pappano sowie zahlreiche 'Special-Guests', darunter die Sängerinnen Vanessa Paradis, Camélia Jordana und Sopranistin Sabine Devieilhe.
Die Idee zu Cinema nahm Gestalt an, als ihm Komponist Michel Legrand Partituren seiner Filmmusiken schickte, darunter ein Medley zu Barbara Streisands Filmklassiker Yentl. Weitere Titel des Albums (in Bearbeitung für Solo-Klavier - einige aus der Feder Alexandre Tharauds - , für Klavier und Orchester sowie in ihrer Originalversion) stammen aus Film-Klassikern wie Cinema Paradiso, Die fabelhafte Welt der Amélie, E. T., Der Leopard, Schindlers Liste und Star Wars.
